# Chodkevičiai (Chodkiewicz)

A noble house of Lithuanian-Ruthenian origin, securely documented from 1422, that rose from Orthodox Grodno-area boyar status into one of the highest-ranking magnate families of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, holding hereditary status as Counts of the Holy Roman Empire from 1555. Divided into the Bykhov, Berestovitsa, and Suprasl branches, the family produced the celebrated grand hetman Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, victor of the Battle of Kircholm (1605), before its senate-level political power faded after 1652; the surname survives to the present without hereditary titles.

## Origin
