# Goštautai (Gasztołdowie)

A Lithuanian-origin magnate house documented from the late 14th century, dominant in Grand Duchy politics under Kazimieras Jogailaitis through the offices of Jonas, Martynas, Albertas, and Stanislovas Goštautas, and extinct in its principal male line in 1542, after which much of its patrimony passed to the Radvila (Radziwiłł) family.

## Origin
The safest genealogical starting point is cautious: a 'Goštautas' who was likely a military commandant at Veliuona and died around 1364 is only the possible founder. VLE describes Andrius Goštautas (elder of Vilnius, 1387-1389; witness to the Treaty of Salynas, 1398) as 'thought to have been' this founder's son, and Petras Goštautas (lord of Geranainiai, elder of Krėva from 1401) as Andrius's son - both links belong to the partly-reconstructed early generations. The genealogy becomes materially firmer only with Jonas Goštautas, whom Lithuanian Academy of Sciences parchment indexes identify explicitly as 'Goštautas Jonas, Petro s.' (son of Petras).
