# Pacai (Pacowie)

A Ruthenian-Lithuanian magnate house of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, first securely documented in the mid-fifteenth century and rising to become one of the leading families of the state in the later seventeenth century under the chancellor Krzysztof Zygmunt Pacas, the grand hetman Mykolas Kazimieras Pacas, and the bishop Mikołaj Stefan Pacas. The family later promoted a mythologized descent from the Florentine Pazzi that modern scholarship rejects as unsubstantiated dynastic propaganda, and it remained politically active into the first half of the nineteenth century.

The further link from Pacas (1450) to his presumed son Jurgis Pacas is drawn from the research brief's own structured genealogy rather than an independently re-cited claim in its narrative prose. The family's later claim of descent from the Florentine Pazzi is treated in modern scholarship (Baniulytė) as a 17th-century dynastic myth that gained force after Steponas Pacas's Italian journey, not as verified genealogy, and is not modeled as a relationship in this file.
