# Sapiegos (Sapiehowie)

A major magnate house of Ruthenian-Orthodox origin in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, securely documented from the mid-fifteenth-century chancery career of Semen Sapieha, commonly ranked just after the Radziwiłłs in wealth and influence. Divided into the older Chareya-Ruzhany and younger Kodeń branches, the family reached its political apogee in the late seventeenth century under the grand hetman Kazimierz Jan Sapieha and the grand treasurer Benedykt Paweł Sapieha, before defeat at the Battle of Valkininkai in 1700 broke Sapieha political hegemony in Lithuania. The family's later claim of descent from Narimantas, son of Gediminas, is treated by modern scholarship as dynastic self-legitimation rather than proven genealogy.
