# Tiškevičiai (Tyszkiewiczy)

The Tiškevičiai (Polish: Tyszkiewicz), documented from 1437 and counts from 1516, were one of the major magnate houses of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, prominent from the 16th through the early 20th century through the Skumin and Lahojsk branches, producing numerous voivodes, bishops, hetmans and, in the 19th century, pioneering archaeologists and major landed patrons of estates such as Palanga, Lentvaris, Kretinga, Užutrakis, and Raudondvaris.

## Origin
Kalenikas Miškovičius received extensive lands in Volhynia and around Kiev from Grand Duke Švitrigaila in 1437 for faithful service; his son Tiška/Timotiejus's five heirs were already called Tiškevičiai in the sources. A modern revisionist thesis (Andrzej Zięba) argues the family instead derived from 'Kalenik the Armenian', a landholder in the Ruthenian part of the Kingdom of Poland; this is treated here as disputed historiography rather than settled consensus, and Kalenikas Miškovičius is retained as the earliest reliably documented protoplast per the standard genealogy.
