# Third Partition (1795)

Russia, Prussia and Austria completed the partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Most Lithuanian lands were absorbed by the Russian Empire.

## Why it matters
The final partition erased the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the map and placed most Lithuanian lands under Russian imperial rule. It ended the Grand Duchy as a state but not the legal, cultural, and political traditions later independence movements invoked.
